| Jeannie Sellmer's contemporary landscapes have a painterly realism style unique to her own. Her crisp, colorful images capture the grand vistas and saturating light of New Mexico's landscape. Many of her oil paintings start on location where she does sketches and studies that become references for larger studio paintings. Memory and emotion play a large role in influencing the outcome. Her painting is governed by the process-editing and refining, distilling the image to its essentials, while still retaining the associative feeling and mood intrinsic to that particular place. Jeannie's aim in representing the landscape is not based on strict adherence to reality, but rather an expressive transcription of her experience of the landscape. Come in and see her work in person. I think you will enjoy her interpretation of our enchanting landscape. If you love her landscapes come and check out her abstract paintings. They are incredible. Her wonderful talent ranges from realism to abstraction.
Artist Statement:
"Color, value, shape, and texture are the primary guiding elements when I paint. I am interested in making paintings that evoke both a sense of energy and contemplation, inviting the viewer to engage in the visual field with a sense of meandering exploration and open interpretation.
The stimulus for my ideas comes from various sources: color combinations, geometric forms, nature, music, memories, and sensations. All are interwoven in the evolution of the painting.
As I work on the painting, I build it up in veiled layers. The painting changes with each additional layer, retaining traces of what previously happened and influencing decisions I will make for subsequent layers.
I like to keep my approach spontaneous, working the surface while creating an interplay of subtle transitions of color and texture, resulting in a complex and nuanced surface of color harmony and balance."~ Jeannie |
